Bingo lovers continue to show support for the Herby Ham Activity Center’s bingo events where, three-times a week, approximately 60 people gather each game day to take their chances at winning a jackpot.

“If we have 80 [people] and over, our prize fees increase,” said Sue Rankin, Herby Ham Activity Center director.

She said the more packages they sell, the higher the night’s payout is.

For health and safety measures, bingo attendees are required to wear a face mask to enter the building but once inside may remove masks as long as they maintain six feet of distance between players.

The center is following current occupancy guidelines, and is operating at 50 percent capacity, Rankin said.

So far this year, during the first and second quarter combined, the Herby Ham Activity Center has paid out an estimated $90,325 worth of regular prizes over $50, according to the Texas Lottery Commission’s earning report.

This figure does not include pull-tab instant bingo winnings.

During quarter two, the center held bingo on 18 occasions, with gross receipts totaling $59,928.

After payouts, net receipts totaled $16,133, Rankin said, explaining that after expenses and taxes the center’s earnings from the second quarter totaled $3,867.

The earnings and gross receipts are reflective of the closure of the center during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the lull in activities, the center was still able to make a charitable distribution of $10,000 to the center’s purposes, which Rankin said was from the first quarter.

“The $10K went to the center to help with operation costs, which just skimmed the surface,” Rankin said. “All of our rentals have been either canceled or rescheduled to either later on this year or 2021.”

Rankin said the event rentals were the center’s biggest income. Other sources of revenue stem from fundraisers, another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have also not have been able to have any other fundraisers such as market day, fundraiser banquet/silent auction, or anything with our shop such as Christmas in July,” Rankin said.

Along with offering bingo every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, other activities – like water aerobics, line dancing and afternoon card games – are resuming.

For those interested in water aerobics, the pool is open with additional safety measures, including being cleaned twice weekly.  Additionally, no more than nine people may participate in a class at one time, and the center is also requesting that members shower at home before coming to join a pool class.

Other exercise opportunities include the circuit gym, exercise room, line dancing and Zumba.

The center is located at 248 FM 3447, Uvalde. For more information, call 830-591-2711.
