LEXINGTON, Ky. — After being around for almost 100 years, the Kentucky Theater is temporarily shutting its doors due to COVID-19. The Lexington mayor’s office announced that due to low numbers and the struggle to get movies, they decided to shut the theatre down on October 1 until further notice.

“Well, simply said, the Kentucky theater is a victim to COVID-19, just not enough people coming to the theater to sustain a business,” said Fred Mills, the manager for the Kentucky Theater.

The building will remain maintained throughout the shutdown, being cleaned and sanitized so that they are ready to open when they can do so.

“Our intent was to make the Kentucky Theatre everyone's theater, which I think we have. And the bottom line is that the Kentucky Theatre moves forward again at some point when conditions are more favorable,” Mills said.

The Kentucky Theater will continue their showings through October 1 and hopes to reopen their doors back up to the public by next spring.
