OLDHAM Athletic have not ruled out some pre-Christmas transfer activity.
Latics head to Notts County on Boxing Day with latest signing Joe Nuttall available to them for the first time since completing his move from Scunthorpe United, and two games of a three-match ban he incurred with The Iron.
But there could be further ins and outs before they make the trip to Meadow Lane for the first game of their festive double header with the National League leaders.
Manager David Unsworth is looking to scale back a squad that has grown since his appointment in September, having been backed by the board to strengthen with new signings.
However, there could also be another new addition, on a permanent transfer, before their first meeting with Notts County, with club officials in negotiations to secure the deal.
"Potentially there may be one (before Boxing Day). We're working really, really hard on one. I'd love it to get over the line before Christmas and him be available for Boxing Day but we'll see. We're at that crucial point where it could go either way," said Unsworth, who is also looking at options for players on the periphery to move on.
"We're probably carrying a few too many players and those players who haven't been involved now, I'd like to think we can free them up and go and play some football elsewhere, and that's what we'll try to do," he added.
"There are three or four lads who haven't been involved or played a lot of football who are talking to other clubs so it's a case of wait and see. Their agents are speaking to clubs and a couple of them are quite close but they're not over the line yet.
"There's potential for a couple of permanent deals and maybe one or two loans as well."
Latics have not been restricted to transfer windows since relegation from the Football League, which has allowed Unsworth to put his own stamp on the side.
But the opening of the next transfer window on January 1 does free up different options, notably with Premier League clubs and their academies able to do business.
"The options are interesting, there are one or two things that we're looking at," said former Everton Academy boss Unsworth.
"We'll always look and we'll always try to bring in people who are better than we've got into the club.
"It's just an ongoing process."
