Cristiano Ronaldo: I told South Korea player to shut up - The Athletic

Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested he told a South Korean player to “shut up” when he was substituted on Friday — and insisted the comments were not directed at Fernando Santos.

Television cameras caught Ronaldo telling someone to “shut up” during Portugal’s match against South Korea and there were suggestions it was his nation’s head coach.

But Ronaldo made it clear that was not the case. He said: “The Korean player was telling me to leave quickly and I told him to shut up because he has no authority.

“There is no need for controversy. It’s the heat of the match. Whatever happens, things always stay on the pitch. The most important thing is that we have to be united. We are in the next phase. Not only the players, but also the Portuguese people have to be confident.”

Portugal finished top of Group H despite the late 2-1 defeat to South Korea and will face Switzerland in the round of 16 on Tuesday.

Fernando Santos added: “Ronaldo was angry with the Korean player who was insulting him and kicking him off the field. He responded to him, it’s perfectly normal. I heard what the Korean said, in English, and I have no doubt about it.

“Ronaldo replied, ‘You must be in a big hurry for me to leave.’ Pepe even went after the Korean player for that.”
