DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings honored their 1997 and 1998 Stanley Cup championship teams the past two games and turned in a pair of defensive performances those clubs would appreciate.
Ville Husso made 26 saves Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 victory over the New York Islanders at Little Caesars Arena.
Lucas Raymond scored during a five-on-three power play and Pius Suter notched a shorthanded goal. Dominik Kubalik had a goal and an assist, giving him 14 points to tie Dylan Larkin for the team lead.
This was Husso’s second shutout in seven starts this season and the fifth of his career. He has allowed just one goal the past two games.
The Red Wings (6-3-2) snapped the Islanders’ five-game winning streak. New York is 7-5-0).
The Red Wings, following a scoreless first period, scored two unanswered goals in the second.
Raymond capitalized on a five-on-three power play with his fourth goal of the season at 6:29. Kubalik’s pass through the crease hit Ryan Pulock’s skate before Raymond fired the loose puck in the net.
It was an eventful period for Raymond, who leveled Mathew Barzal with a big open-ice hit when the Islanders center was skating through the neutral zone with his head down. That drew the Islanders’ wrath which led to a Detroit power play and shortly after a two-man advantage.
Raymond later was hit in front of the Islanders net, leading to Larkin’s retaliatory roughing penalty.
Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov was shaken up and forced to leave the game after Raymond was checked into him.
Ilya Sorokin entered and promptly allowed a shorthanded goal to Suter on a breakaway at 12:51, which put Detroit up 2-0.
Varlamov returned for the start of the third period.
Kubalik put his team up 3-0 by firing in a shot off the rush at 10:13. It was his fifth goal.
