AMES, Iowa – Jaren Holmes poured in 19 points and the Cyclone defense forced 27 turnovers in a 68-53 Iowa State (3-0) victory over Milwaukee (2-2) Sunday night in Hilton Coliseum.

Milwaukee entered the game averaging 89.0 points per game, but the Cyclones put the clamps down by forcing 20-plus turnovers (27) for the second time this season and holding the Panthers to a season-low 53 points.

ISU converted 27 points off Panther miscues and never trailed in the contest.

Aljaž Kunc added 10 points, three blocks and three steals and Robert Jones posted 10 points from off the bench. True freshman Demarion Watson grabbed a career-high eight boards to lead all players.

How It Happened
Iowa State forced turnovers on Milwaukee's first five possessions to jump out to an early 8-0 lead, as the Panthers failed to attempt a shot through three minutes of action.

Caleb Grill and Kunc each buried a trey, and Osun Osunniyi scored down low to stretch the Cyclone advantage to 20-8 at the second media timeout of the first half. The Panthers trimmed the Cyclone lead to five points (24-19) thanks to an 11-4 run, but ISU bounced right back.

Hason Ward had a thunderous put-back dunk followed by a Kunc trey and back-to-back Holmes baskets, and suddenly the Cyclones had their largest lead of the first half (34-21) with three minutes left before intermission.

Iowa State went into the break with a 37-26 lead, forcing 15 Panther first-half turnovers. Holmes had 15 points at intermission.

A Watson tip-in gave the Cyclones their first 20-point lead of the game (49-28) with fifteen minutes remaining. ISU led by as many as 24 points. The Panthers were able to whittle the lead down to 11 points at 62-51 when Zach Howell hit a triple at the 4:07 mark, the closest the Panthers got since the end of the first half.

Top Performance
Jaren Holmes had the hot hand for the Cyclones, connecting on 7-of-17 field goals enroute to 19 points. Holmes scored 15 of his 19 points in the opening period and dished out a game-high five dimes. Holmes scored in various fashion, drilling 3-of-6 3-pointers and finding his mark on several runners in the paint.

ISU is back in action on Thursday, facing Villanova at the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland, Ore. Tipoff is at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
