Fourteen years ago, Aaron Rodgers became the Green Bay Packers‘ starting quarterback. Ever since, the Packers’ Super Bowl has remained open.
Until now.
Following Green Bay’s fifth consecutive defeat on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, hopes of a turnaround are slipping away fast.
It would take a miracle for this Packers team to even make the playoffs, let alone win another Super Bowl.
While Rodgers may continue to play into 2023, this team is trending in the wrong direction. There are far too many areas of weakness, most notably on offense, and it’s hard to see how they can turn things around in the near future.
The 2022 team is broken. At 3-6 and with a tough schedule to come, all hope is lost.
A team that lost to the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions and barely survived a game against a third-string quarterback is unlikely to pile up victories with the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, and Philadelphia Eagles on deck.
So, if the Super Bowl is gone this season, what about in 2023 should Rodgers play?
Well, Green Bay will somehow need to fix this offense. But with limited cap room and a free-agent list featuring Elgton Jenkins, Allen Lazard, Marcedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan, Randall Cobb, Yosh Nijman, and Sammy Watkins, that’s a monumental ask.
Adrian Amos, Dean Lowry, Jarran Reed, and Mason Crosby are also free agents.
Aaron Rodgers turns 39 in December. Another year on, he’ll be entering his age-40 season.
Green Bay’s best chance to get back to the Super Bowl came in 2020 and 2021. Rodgers was an MVP both years. The offense was unstoppable in ’20, while the defense improved in ’21.
The Packers decided to run it back in ’22. Well, partly back. They lost key players like Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Billy Turner, and Za’Darius Smith.
That decision has backfired massively.
Aaron Rodgers may play in 2023, he may not.
Regardless, the Packers’ Super Bowl window has slammed shut.
