DETROIT – Zach Fucale did what no other goaltender has done to the Detroit Red Wings in their 95-year history – record a shutout against them in his NHL debut.
Fucale made 21 saves Thursday and the Washington Capitals defeated Detroit 2-0 at Little Caesars Arena, snapping the Red Wings’ three-game winning streak.
The Red Wings (7-6-2) didn’t exactly make Fucale work that hard. They failed to record a shot on goal during four power plays, including a length five-on-three advantage.
Fucale, 26, was drafted in the second round by Montreal in 2013.
The Red Wings have been shut out three times in 15 games. The Capitals improved to 7-2-4, despite missing three key forwards due to injuries – Nicklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie and former Red Wing Anthony Mantha.
The Red Wings pulled goalie Thomas Greiss with 2:20 left for the extra skater but still could not generate much pressure.
Six penalties were called in the second period and each team had a length five-on-three. The Red Wings killed the Capitals’ two-man advantage that lasted for 1:49 but failed to convert on their own five-on-three for 1:24 later in the period.
The Red Wings started strong, applying a lot of pressure and generating some chances the first half of the first period. They were outshooting Washington 7-1 at one point.
But the Capitals scored twice in 10 seconds to capture the momentum.
Dmitry Orlov blasted in a one-timer from the top of the face-off circle while Tom Wilson provided a net-front screen at 12:43.
Lars Eller made a good move to score on a two-on-one at 12:53, after a quick transition following a turnover in the neutral zone.
The Red Wings wrap up this four-game homestand Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens, who have defeated them twice this season.
