Despite a growing interest in health awareness, COVID-19 led to a sharp, immediate decline in physical activity among U.S. adults as gyms closed and residents increasingly stayed home.

A recent study by the American College of Physicians using fitness trackers found that average daily step counts were down 15% in the United States within two weeks of COVID-19 being declared a pandemic.

With coronavirus cases rising nationally, physical activity is as important as ever for the physical and mental health benefits it delivers.

Researchers ranked cities according to the percentage of adults who are physically active.

In Albuquerque, 77.9% of adults reported being physically active outside of work within the last 30 days, which is higher than the national average of 73.7%.

Out of all large U.S. cities, Albuquerque is the 11th most physically active, according to the study.

It also showed that 86.8% of adults are in good physical health, meanwhile 85.7% of adults are in good mental health.

Leading the pack is Seattle, followed by San Francisco, San Diego, Portland, Oregon, San Jose, Denver, Colorado Springs, Oakland, California, Long Beach, California and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Albuquerque ranks just outside the top 10.

According to the study, researchers used the most recent health data from the CDC’s 500 Cities survey to calculate the most physically active cities in the United States.
