BIG RAPIDS – It’s starting to get colder but many fishermen are focusing on various areas where the fish are still biting.
Tanner Havens, of Frank’s Sporting Goods, in Morley, indicated fishing activity has been slow.
“I’ve had a heckuva lot of people bring in some nice bucks this year,” Havens said. “As far as the fishing, I haven’t heard too much. There’s a lot of hunting but not too much fishing.”
The DNR said in the Manistee area steelhead fishing was fair. Low and clear water conditions have made fishing tough for the last couple of weeks, but some fish were caught the DNR said, adding that when stream fishing in low and clear conditions, anglers should consider dropping down to a smaller line diameter such as 4-to- 6 pounds with fluorocarbon leaders, and use natural baits or smaller lures and flies.
“It’s been kind of quiet this past week with the hunting season and so forth,” Larry Scharich, of Shipwatch Marina, in Manistee said. “I haven’t heard too much about the fishing. It should pick up.”
“They’re still catching them on the beach,” Ryan Hamilton, of Tangled Tackle Co., in Manistee, said. “There’s juveniles being caught on the beach about 14 inches. The Little Manistee they’re still catching and doing good on the steelhead.”
A spokesman at Captain Chuck’s in Ludington said anglers are still catching a few perch in Pere Marquette Lake
“I don’t know if they’ve been out lately,” he said. “The weather has been pretty cold out. Weather permitting, if it’s been decent to get out, the piers have been really good for steelhead. If people are out trolling by the Point, they were getting some steelhead, lake trout and small kings. The PM river is doing really well on steelhead fishing, getting them on spawn and wax worms. On Hamlin Lake two weeks ago a couple of guys were doing well jigging for walleyes in about 28 to 31 feet.”
Fishing Tip: Fall is an important time to think about gear maintenance

With the colder months quickly approaching, many anglers may be getting ready to store their gear for the season. Below are a few maintenance tips you should follow so your gear is cared for and ready to be used next season.
• Make sure your gear is clean and completely dry before storing it. Start by cleaning everything (rods, reels and line) in fresh water with soap or with the manufacturer’s recommended solution to remove any materials that may have become attached or embedded.
• Inspect your gear for any damage and make any repairs or prepare for replacements.
• Don’t store any of your gear in direct sunlight or in a place where heat and/or moisture might build up.
• Air your waders out completely, and don’t forget to hang them upside-down for the months they are out of use.
