WELLINGTON, New Zealand--Air New Zealand Ltd. said it has canceled more than 1,000 flights after the New Zealand government indicated quarantine-free travel won't resume with Australia this year.
The airline, which is half owned by the New Zealand government, said about 20,000 travelers are affected by the cancellations up until end-December. Australia and New Zealand had periods of quarantine-free travel during the pandemic until the Covid-19 Delta variant drove new outbreaks of the virus.
"This will be particularly tough news for families and friends who were hoping to catch up over Christmas," the airline said. "Our hands are tied until border restrictions ease, and we receive further clarity from the New Zealand Government."
New Zealand closed its border to all but citizens and long-term residents in March 2020 to help slow the spread of Covid-19. Thousands of New Zealanders have been shut out of the country due to limited capacity in the military-run quarantine system.
The government recently halved the mandatory quarantine of two weeks--for arrivals who are vaccinated--and aims to shift to home isolation early next year.
