Box Score

Well, the winning streak eventually had to come to an end. Unfortunately, it came before we all got burgers.

Freddy Peralta was on the mound today, and it was a getaway Sunday lineup with regular starters Christian Yelich and Omar Narvaez getting the day off. It didn’t take long for the Pirates to get on the board, with Kevin Newman (the second Pirates batter) hitting a home run to stake the Pirates to a 1-0 lead. The Brewers did have an opportunity in the next inning, loading the bases with one out, but Freddy Peralta tried to bunt a run in, and it ended up being a double play to end the inning.

The Pirates got their other run in the sixth inning. Over the course of two pitches, former Brewer Ben Gamel singled, and then Wilmer Difo doubled to bring Gamel in and put the Pirates up 2-0. Peralta did get into a bit of trouble that inning, loading the bases with two walks to follow that, but got out of the inning with no more damage.

Overall, it was a rough day for Peralta. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs, but also allowed three hits and five walks. He did strike out seven and post a quality start, but it wasn’t his best day. Despite that, he kept the Brewers in striking distance.

The bullpen stepped in to keep it close. Jake Cousins took the seventh and had his fifth straight scoreless appearance to start his career, but did not have a strikeout for the first time. Brad Boxberger took the eighth and worked around a single to pitch a scoreless inning.

The offense did have a chance to tie it in the ninth inning. Willy Adames led off the inning with a double to put a runner in scoring position right away. After Avisail Garcia flew out, Craig Counsell went to his power hitters and brought in Christian Yelich and Omar Narvaez as pinch hitters to try to tie the game. Unfortunately, both flew out and the Brewers winning streak came to an end.

With the winning streak over, here are some stats from the 11-game winning streak:

  • At the start of the winning streak, the Brewers were tied for the division lead at 40-33. After 11 wins, the Brewers had built the division lead up to 8 games. They did lose a game off that lead today with their loss, but still hold a 7-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds in second place. The Cubs (who lost their ninth straight today) are 8.5 games behind and sit at 42-42, and the Cardinals are 10 games behind at 41-44. The Pirates are in last place at 30-53, 20 games behind.
  • The Brewers have the third best record in the National League and fifth best in baseball. In the National League, only the Giants (52-34) and Dodgers (53-31) have better records. Over in the American League, the Red Sox (53-32) and Astros (52-33) also have better records.
  • Before the winning streak, the Brewers had 291 runs scored compared to 298 runs allowed (-7 run differential). They scored 84 runs in those 11 games, compared to 28 runs allowed. That boosted their run differential to +49.
  • As a team on offense, the Brewers had a .281/.380/.490 batting line, recorded 108 hits, 22 doubles, 18 home runs, 56 walks (3 intentional), store 11 bases (only caught 3 times), and only grounded into 6 double plays.
  • Meanwhile, the pitching staff posted a 2.23 ERA and struck out 112 batters compared to 49 walks. They had two shutouts during the winning streak, one of those being a two-hitter. That also included a game with seven runs allowed in the first.

It’s back to work (and hopefully the start of a new winning streak) tomorrow as the Brewers travel to New York to face the division-leading Mets. All-Star Brandon Woodruff makes the start for the Brewers. He will face rookie Tylor Megill, who is making his third major league start. First pitch is at 6:10 pm and will be on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
