One run was all the MoonDogs needed to get the victory over the Huskies on Sunday, as a RBI single from shortstop Evan Berkey in the seventh inning gave Mankato a 1-0 win. MoonDog starting pitcher Luke Young was phenomenal, tossing seven shutout innings while reaching the 100 pitch mark. Husky starter Cameron Pool bounced back nicely from his last outing, going five innings without allowing a run as well.
Fast Forward to the seventh inning, lefty relief pitcher Ben Gerl began the inning with a couple of walks and a single. Immediately after, Gerl let up an RBI single to Berkey into center field that scored the first run of the game. Gerl was replaced by Ohio State’s Ethan Hammerberg, who collected the final two outs of the inning to keep it a one-run contest. The righty from UCLA in Carson Hamro closed the door in the last two innings for the MoonDogs, picking up his second save and a sweep on the road against the Huskies. Young snatched his fifth win of the year, moving his record to 5-1 and ERA down to 2.15.
The Huskies officially move onto the All-Star break, where Ambren Voitik, Mike Boeve, Will McEntire and Eli Sundquist will head to Mankato for the All-Star game on July 20. With Sunday's sweep, the Huskies move to 7-5 in the second half and 19-27 overall. The wait to get back into the win column will be pushed back to Thursday, when the Huskies hit the road to take on the Bismarck Larks in a two-game set.
