Yellowjackets shut out Vikings in doubleheader - Perham Focus

Chas Melvin was the starting pitcher for the Yellowjackets in game one, throwing a complete game shutout and allowing just one hit. He struck out 14 batters in the contest.

The Yellowjackets scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Austin Aanenson singled on a line drive to center field, driving in Solberg. Jacob McAllister hit a hard ground ball and reached on an error by Pelican Rapids shortstop Carsen McNeal. Mensing and Aanenson also scored.

Perham added another run in the top of the fourth inning when Andrew Smith singled on a line drive to right fielder Logan Fahje, driving in McAllister. In the top of the fifth inning, Ben Shumansky and Solberg scored on a line drive single to center field by Finn Diggins. Aanenson drove in Mensing, and McAllister hit a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Diggins and giving the Yellowjackets an 8-0 lead.

A five-run sixth inning completed the scoring for Perham. Alex Lyness came in to pitch for the Vikings, and Melvin scored on a bases-loaded walk to Solberg. Shumansky scored after Mensing was hit by a pitch. Diggins then doubled on a line drive to right field, driving in Logan Pulju and Solberg. Pelican Rapids made another pitching change, bringing in Peyton Blakeway for Lyness. McAllister then ground into a fielder's choice, and Mensing scored the final run of the game for the Yellowjackets.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Pulju earned the victory for the Yellowjackets. He gave up just two hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking one before Aanenson threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

The Yellowjackets got their offense started in the first inning, when Melvin hit a line drive double to right field and Smith scored. Perham added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, when Melvin hit another line drive double to right field and Smith scored another run. Shumansky singled to left field, driving in Melvin.

In the fifth inning, Smith singled to left field, driving in McAllister. Two consecutive wild pitches scored Smith and Melvin, and Shumansky scored on a passed ball.

Luke Sjolie started the game for the Vikings and allowed six hits and five runs over four and a third innings before being relieved by Fahje, who threw one and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.

The Yellowjackets improve to 13-2 on the season. They host Moorhead at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20, for Senior Night at Krueger Field.

Schossow pitches no-hitter against Frazee

Perham's Caden Schossow threw a no-hitter Tuesday, May 11, against Frazee in the second game of a doubleheader, leading the Yellowjackets to a 10-0 victory. The Yellowjackets also won the first game against the Hornets 13-1.

In the first game, Perham scored early on a sacrifice fly by Rian Solberg. The Yellowjackets added another run in the second inning on a single by Andrew Smith. The Yellowjackets scored three more in the top of the third inning when Logan Pulju singled to left field, driving in Ben Shumansky. Solberg drove in Pulju on a line drive double to right field, and Solberg scored when Finn Diggins doubled on a fly ball to center field.

The Yellowjackets added two more runs in the top of the third inning. Shumansky hit a fly ball double to center field, allowing Chas Melvin to score, and Shumansky scored after two consecutive wild pitches by Frazee's Scott Seim.

Seim was relieved in the fifth inning by by Mason Guhlke, who gave up a single to Jacob McAllister on a ground ball to the shortstop. Guhlke then walked Smith, and McAllister scored on a wild pitch. Shumansky drove in Smith on a line drive single to left field, and Jack Mensing drove in Shumansky on a line drive single to center field.

Perham scored three more runs in the seventh inning. Pulju scored on a wild pitch, and Solberg scored after Diggins hit a ground ball out to shortstop. Mensing scored on a pop fly double by Austin Aanenson before the Hornets were able to end the Yellowjackets' scoring.

Frazee scored its only run in the first inning on an error.

Diggins was the winning pitcher for Perham, allowing five hits and one run over six innings and striking out seven before being relieved by Caden Schossow for the final inning. Seim earned the loss for Frazee, giving up seven runs on seven hits and striking out six in four innings before Guhlke came in to pitch two innings and Byron Kroupenski threw one inning of relief.

Pulju and Solberg led the Yellowjackets with three hits each in the game. The team also stole 10 bases, with three players stealing more than one. Pulju led the team with three.

The second game featured Schossow's no-hitter, and Perham's offense also produced once again, getting on the board in the first inning on a solo home run by Smith, followed by a double by Shumansky that drove in Melvin.

The Yellowjackets notched seven runs in the third inning thanks to a triple by Solberg, a single by Shumansky, a home run by Mensing, and a double by Shumansky. They added one more run in the bottom of the fifth when Pulju drove in Melvin on a line drive single to left field.

Schossow pitched Perham to victory with the no-hitter, striking out four and walking zero in the win. Frazee's Brandon Nguyen took the loss for the Hornets, allowing nine runs and nine hits while striking out one over three innings. He was relieved by Brock Barlund, who pitched one inning and gave up two hits while walking one.

The Yellowjackets had 13 hits in the contest, with multiple hits coming from Shumansky, Mensing, Melvin, and Solberg.
