STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored late in the first half and early in the second to defeat Bucknell, 2-0, in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon (May 2) at the PSU Field Hockey Complex. With the victory -- the team's 11th in a row -- the Wolverines advance to the NCAA final four for the fifth time in the program history and second time in four seasons.
The Wolverines started a bit slow but settled in -- and largely dictating play -- by the second quarter. Junior Katie Anderson, who just missed on U-M's first scoring opportunity in the first quarter, broke through in just 62 seconds before the halftime break, at 28:58, after carrying the ball into the circle from midfield and blasting a hard shot to the lower-left corner of the cage. It was her third goal of the season.
Michigan padded its lead off a penalty corner just minutes into the third quarter, at 32:34. It was the Wolverines' second corner after failing to get a shot off on their first, and U-M again struggled to get a clean stop. But senior Halle O'Neill covered to put a shot on goal, and the rebound kicked to the left, where junior Kathryn Peterson, who inserted, banged it in behind the Bison goalkeeper for her third of the season.
Bucknell had a couple chances with a pair of third-quarter penalty corners of its own, but the Wolverines twice broke it up on the scoring arc, including a great tackle from fifth-year senior Kate Burney to prevent a shot on the latter.
Michigan outshot the Bison, 10-4, and outcornered them, 3-2. Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker posted one save for her 10th complete game shutout of the season and ninth over the Wolverines' 11-game win streak, while Bucknell goalkeeper Clara McCormick, who played all but six minutes, stopped four of U-M's six shots on goal.
Michigan will face either No. 3 seed Louisville in the NCAA semifinals next Friday (May 7) at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C..
