A large explosion occurred yesterday early morning at 05:40 am local time at the volcano. While the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Darwin initially alerted about a possible high-level plume reaching up to 40,000 ft (12 km) altitude, the eruption although still rather large seems to have been significantly smaller.
From ground observations, the volcano observatory estimated the plume height "only" to be "around 11072 FT (3460 M) above sea level", although it added that it may have be higher than what could be observed clearly.

The explosive eruption of the volcano continues at moderate levels and its activity has remained essentially unchanged.
The Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) noted that vulcanian-type explosions at regular intervals of 66 per day occurred from the summit crater during 3-9 May.
