A report of a possible explosive device forced police to close Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel for about three hours on Saturday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
A 911 caller reported that a Kia SUV, traveling westbound, contained an “explosive device” and the vehicle was stopped, said Trooper Josh Lewis, a CSP spokesman.
The highway was shut down in both directions as a safety precaution, Lewis said.
The SUV was on the westside of the tunnel. Westbound lanes were shutdown at the east portal of the tunnel. Eastbound lanes were closed in Silverthorne. The highway reopened at about 5:15 p.m. after the Jefferson County Bomb deemed the area safe.
The incident is under investigation.
