NEPHI, Utah — Authorities shut down Interstate 15 in both directions in Juab County for hours Wednesday after shots were exchanged between a suspect and police.

Lt. Nick Street with Utah Highway Patrol said a bystander was taken via helicopter to the hospital after being shot in the leg.

Southbound lanes of I-15 have been reopened, but Northbound lanes are still closed as of 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The incident started with deputies from Juab County. Where the initial incident began and what caused it was not made immediately available.

The suspect stole a patrol vehicle and the deputy's rifle and fled the scene. A K9 was in the stolen vehicle but has since been recovered without injuries. At some point, shots were fired between the suspect and police, according to UHP.

The Millard Sheriff's Office shared a photo of the suspect on Facebook, and said he is about 6 feet tall and 280 pounds. He was last seen in a blue-gray shirt. His name was not made immediately available.

After multiple agencies and helicopters underwent a massive manhunt to find the suspect, he was found and taken into custody around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Northbound traffic is closed at milepost 200 near Sevier River, while soutbound lanes have since opened. All vehicles were being diverted during the closure.

Utah County SWAT teams were mobilized to the area, while Highway Patrol troopers were seen racing past FOX 13 news crews headed to the scene.
