Highway 101 shut down as Mountain View police investigate 'medical emergency' - Mountain View Voice

Update: As of 6:15 p.m., all northbound lanes on Highway 101 remain closed at Old Middlefield Way, and southbound traffic is reduced to one lane at Rengstorff due to police activity, according to a notification sent via San Mateo County's SMC Alert system. Major delays are expected and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Traffic on northbound Highway 101 is shut down at Old Middlefield Way in Mountain View this morning as police crisis negotiators seek to resolve what is being described as a medical emergency.

Mountain View police reported over social media that traffic was halted as of 8:30 a.m. due to an incident on the Old Middlefield Way offramp over Highway 101. Though it was described as a medical emergency, Mountain View police and California Highway Patrol have both sent crisis negotiators to the location.

Santa Clara County's mobile crisis response team, which handles mental health crises, is also reportedly on scene.

Drivers are being asked to take alternate routes including Highway 85 and Interstate 280. CHP is also assisting drivers stuck on northbound Highway 101 to get onto alternate routes. Traffic has been diverted onto Old Middlefield Way as of 9:42 a.m.

Police say they are working to "peacefully resolve" the incident, and that more updates will be available soon. Northbound lanes remain closed out of an abundance of caution, police said.
