Despite the loss to the Green Bay Packers, Sunday’s game was another step in the right direction for the Detroit Lions. The further away from the Matt Patricia era, the better this team will become. Darrell Bevell might not become the next head coach, but the team looks alive in a season that is dead.
However, the biggest loss for the Lions came not on the scoreboard. Matthew Stafford took an awkward hit from Kenny Clark late in the game, and while he was able to complete the touchdown drive, the injury forced him out afterwards.
The injury appears to be related to his ribs, given that he received x-rays after the game. This could be viewed as good news, since it appears unrelated to the back injury that sidelined him last year. Then again, this could possibly mark the end of the Stafford era in Detroit. There is no timeline so far, nor is the extent of the injury known, but we have to consider the circumstances.
Three games remain for the Detroit Lions, and they are no cakewalks. The Titans (Week 15) and Buccaneers (Week 16) are both playoff contenders, while the Vikings (Week 17) stomped Detroit in embarrassing fashion in Week 9. Does Stafford give the Lions a better chance of winning than Chase Daniel? Certainly. Is it worth risking his health—either as a player or a trade asset—for essentially pointless games under an interim head coach with a depleted offense around him?

Should the Lions shut down Matthew Stafford?
My answer: I believe they should if the injury is serious enough. If it turns out to be bruising or whatnot, I don’t foresee a long-term consequence—don’t quote me on that though, I’m not a doctor.
However, given what happened in the game, I am pretty concerned. As the Lions put it, he is tough as nails, and you would be hard pressed to take him out of a game that was still in the balance. Yet, that is exactly what happened. Following a fantastic kickoff return from Jamal Agnew, it was Daniel that entered the game with the Lions down 10 points. Stafford went back and forth from the locker room, but never returned. When Stafford is in too much pain to play, that makes me nervous.
Playing Stafford while not completely healthy seems reckless at this point. You can argue that Stafford is a trooper and sitting him out for the rest of the season is disrespectful to his character—if he wants to play, let him play. I would argue that his character is all the more reason to shut him down for the season. I respect his competitiveness, but playing while injured only worsens the situation for a team with nothing to gain. It is a tough decision to make for the organization, but I think you need to let him heal.
