Syracuse, N.Y. -- Interstate 81 southbound was briefly shut down on Saturday as police investigated what started out as a disturbance on Monticello Drive South in Syracuse’s South Side, according to Onondaga County 911 dispatch reports.

Syracuse police have not yet provided additional information about the incident.

At 7:21 p.m., a resident who lives in the 100 block of Monticello Drive South called 911 about a man yelling and a woman crying, according to dispatch reports. When police arrived, the man asked the officers to kill him and was “aggressive” toward officers before he left the area in an SUV, an officer told dispatchers.

It was believed the man was armed, police told dispatchers.

Police later shut down Interstate 81 southbound at the Interstate 481 on-ramp. More than 10 police SUVs could be seen on I-81 southbound. Air 1, an Onondaga County-owned helicopter, could be seen flying near the Onondaga Nation and shining its spotlight on an area adjacent to the highway.

Five police SUVs were posted outside of a house in the 100 block of Monticello Drive South not long after the incident was reported.

The highway was eventually reopened.
