Officials with Southern California Edison (SCE) confirmed Wednesday that they had shut off power to areas in the Santa Clarita Valley, with initial estimates indicating that they would not have power restored until Christmas Day.
Shortly after noon on Wednesday, SCE announced that they implemented Power Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in areas of Canyon Country and the eastern portion of Saugus.
Initial estimates indicate that power may not be restored to these areas until noon on Christmas Day. These estimates are set to be updated throughout the next several days as weather conditions change.
At 3 a.m. Wednesday, SCE officials began monitoring several areas in Canyon Country, Castaic, Val Verde and the northeastern portion of Saugus for the potential implementation of PSPS.
“When forecasts indicate elevated weather conditions, we’ll begin assessing the potential impact to affected areas,” a statement from the SCE website reads. “We’ll analyze historical data to help predict the likelihood of a wildfire occurring, closely monitor weather watch alerts from the National Weather Service, and place incident responders on alert, if needed.”
As of 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, just over 16,000 SCE customers were without power due to the implementation of PSPS. It was unclear how many of those customers were from the Santa Clarita Valley.
A map of the areas under PSPS, as well those being monitored in the Santa Clarita Valley, can be viewed below.

Earlier Wednesday morning, SCE officials began to receive several reports of a power outage throughout Canyon Country, in areas mostly north of Soledad Canyon Road from Whites Canyon Road to Deep Creek Drive.
After investigating these reports, officials estimated that approximately 10,261 SCE customers had been impacted by the Canyon Country power outages.
Reggie Kumar, a spokesperson for SCE, later confirmed that those outages were actually related to PSPS, but were miscatagorized in their Outage Center system.
When a PSPS is instated in any of the monitored areas, SCE officials say that Community Crew Vehicles and Community Resource Centers will be made available to support customers in impacted areas.
“We observe physical distancing practices and provide Customer Resiliency Kits, which include PSPS information, light snacks, water, small resiliency devices, and personal protection equipment,” a statement from the SCE Outage Center site reads.
