Spring Semester Update – November 19, 2020
- Will Bowdoin compete in winter season sports during the spring semester?
Bowdoin will not compete in winter season sports during the spring semester. The lone potential exception to this approach is Nordic Skiing due, in large part, to the outdoor nature of the sport. We will evaluate current conditions, COVID related policies in place at the College, and safety guidelines from the NCAA and the State of Maine during the spring semester when making a determination regarding competing in Nordic. It remains highly unlikely this will occur, and students should not make decisions regarding plans for the spring semester based upon expectations to compete. If we were to compete in Nordic, competition opportunities would be very limited and local (within Maine) with institutions following testing protocols in line or beyond those in place on campus.
- Will Bowdoin compete in spring season sports during the spring semester?
It remains unlikely Bowdoin spring season teams will compete during the spring semester. Students should not make decisions regarding the spring semester based upon expectations to compete. We will evaluate current conditions, COVID related policies in place at the College, and safety guidelines from the NCAA and the State of Maine during the spring semester when making a determination regarding competition on a sport by sport basis. If we were to compete, competition opportunities would be very limited and local with institutions following testing protocols in line or beyond those in place on campus.
- Has the NESCAC made a determination regarding spring season conference contest scheduling and championships?
No, the NESCAC has not made a determination regarding plans for conference scheduling and championships for the spring season. A timeline for a decision on conference play during the spring season has not been determined.
- What about fall season teams at Bowdoin, will they be able to compete in the spring semester?
As it is unlikely we will have competition during the spring semester, if an opportunity does present itself, we are focused on trying to provide the opportunities to compete for spring season teams and therefore fall season teams will not compete this spring. On-campus students and students living in households with on-campus privileges who are members of fall season teams will be able to participate in workouts overseen by coaches during the spring semester.
- What activities will on-campus members of teams, and team members living in a household with on-campus privileges, be able to participate in during the spring semester? Does this apply to members of fall, winter and spring season teams?
Both indoor and outdoor activity is currently permitted when campus status is Yellow, and outdoor activity is permitted when campus status is Orange. As was the case with the beginning of the fall semester, outdoor activity would not be permitted during the initial Orange campus status stage at the beginning of the spring semester. The nature of workouts will vary by teams and students are encouraged to contact their coach for team-specific workout details. During the fall semester, many teams conducted workouts similar to traditional practices, albeit with a limited number of students, with primary focus on skill development. Based upon current guidance, masks are worn during workouts. For planning purposes, workouts are unlikely to begin prior to the week of February 22nd and may begin later in the semester based upon the Campus Status. Where applicable, we will explore virtual competition opportunities during the spring semester (exhibition competition). The aforementioned applies to fall, winter and spring season on-campus students and students living in households with on-campus privileges.
- Will the fitness center and other athletic facilities be open during the spring semester?
Yes, we are planning to operate our facilities in the same way as the fall semester, which included online reservation of workout space in the Buck Center, Farley Field House, Sargent gym, swimming lanes at the pool and court space at Lubin. At this time, we anticipate having ice available for team workouts with coaches and open student skating (with skates available to be signed out through Student Activities) at Watson Arena into early April. Indoor facilities are open when the campus status is Yellow and access to these facilities during the spring semester will be determined by the Campus Status level.
- Will the Governor's Maine State limit of 50 participants for indoor athletic activity impact use of facilities at Bowdoin?
Yes, we will need to adjust our traditional use of Farley and other indoor facilities when planning team workouts during the spring semester. We will utilize our turf fields as much as possible (including teams splitting field space when feasible until grass fields are available) and will adjust workout times at Farley to stay within State guidelines. Whenever possible we will conduct workouts outdoors. If applicable, teams preparing to compete will receive priority in the scheduling of facilities.
- What team-related activities will students studying remotely be able to engage in during the spring semester?
Students should contact their coaches for sport-specific plans for engaging team members during the spring semester (workouts can be provided, etc.). Enrolled students studying remotely will have access to our athletic training staff for telehealth services, sport psychology resources, nutritionist resources and our ongoing department sponsored diversity, equity and inclusion workshops for athletes. Students studying remotely are encouraged to engage in team meetings and other activities as a way of staying connected to teammates and coaches. While unenrolled students will not have access to department support service offerings such as our sport psychologist and nutritionist, coaches remain available and willing to help support students on leave from the College. Access to on-campus fields by students studying remotely will be decided at a later date.
- Does Bowdoin permit students who choose to take a personal leave to take fewer classes upon their return in order to extend their experience into a 9th semester?
No, the College does not allow for this to occur. The student experience is designed to be completed over eight semesters. Students contemplating a personal leave with questions regarding this policy should contact their Dean.
- When is the deadline for students to determine they want to take a personal leave of absence or would prefer to take spring semester classes remotely?
The deadline for conveying plans for the spring semester to the College is November 30th. If individual circumstances change, students can convey a change to their plans for the spring semester at any time. Students should contact their Dean to discuss changes to their original spring semester plans.
- When will members of teams return to campus?
Given the unlikelihood of competing during the spring semester, members of teams will return to campus at the same time as all students for the spring semester.
- When will a further update on spring semester activity be provided?
We expect to provide an update by the end of January, if not before.

Spring Semester Update & NESCAC Winter Season Announcement – October 8, 2020
- Does the canceling of NESCAC regular season conference competition and post-season tournaments mean winter season teams will not compete at all in the spring semester?
The NESCAC announcement only pertains to conference scheduling of competition and does not limit the ability of member institutions to schedule contests with other NESCAC schools, or non-conference opponents.
- How likely is it that Bowdoin winter season teams will compete during the spring semester?
Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely our winter season teams will compete this year. Factors influencing this determination include ongoing concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19, increasingly stringent NCAA safety and testing guidelines governing indoor competition, current restrictions governing indoor athletic activity in the State of Maine, potential limitations on access to athletic facilities in order to support the academic program and considerable restrictions on group travel. We will continue to review these issues and NCAA, CDC and State of Maine safety guidelines on a sport-by-sport basis in the weeks ahead, but for planning purposes, winter season athletes should not anticipate competing during the spring semester.
- What about sports that do not have NESCAC regular season scheduling or post-season championships (Nordic Skiing and Indoor Track)?
Our philosophical approach to planning for winter season sports that do not have NESCAC regular season scheduling or post-season championships will be consistent with teams that have NESCAC scheduling and championships.
- How likely is it that Bowdoin spring season teams will compete during the spring semester?
Based upon anticipated ongoing concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 and current NCAA, CDC and State safety guidelines, it remains uncertain, but is unlikely our spring teams will compete this year. While Bowdoin's current testing program would comply with current NCAA guidelines for competition for outdoor sports, considerable uncertainty surrounds several aspects of competing such as the state of containing the virus during the winter and early spring months, group travel restrictions, game operation concerns, such as a system for testing of officials in Division III, and access to our athletic facilities. A final decision on plans for spring sports will be conveyed when a determination has been made, and there are several months during which barriers to competition could be removed. However, at this time it is difficult to be encouraging regarding the likelihood of competing this year. We anticipate providing a further update regarding spring sport competition prior to the end of the fall semester.
- How likely is it that Bowdoin fall season teams will compete during the spring semester?
Priority will be given to spring season teams competing during the spring semester. Therefore, it is unlikely fall sport teams will compete during the spring semester when also considering the challenges with competing outlined above.
- Will Bowdoin provide updates as new sport specific facility and safety guidelines are provided by the NCAA, the CDC and the State of Maine?
Yes, we will review updates to safety guidelines in a timely fashion and will provide sport specific adjustments to the guidance provided above, when applicable.
- Will Bowdoin consider permitting competition on a sport-by-sport basis?
As noted above, this is highly unlikely for winter season teams and unlikely for spring and fall teams during the spring semester. However, we will review the ability of teams to compete on a sport-by-sport basis and will permit student-athletes to compete if it can be done safely.
- Will athletes in residence during the spring semester be able to workout with teammates and coaches, even if teams are not competing?
Yes, we anticipate student-athletes will be able to workout with teammates and coaches during the spring semester. For planning purposes, workouts are unlikely to begin prior to the week of February 22nd.
Bowdoin announced its Spring 2021 Semester plan on Tuesday, October 5.

Bowdoin Athletics Spring Semester Update - October 6, 2020
- Who will be able to participate in on campus athletic activity during the spring semester?
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in residence (including Seniors living off campus and participating in the College testing program) will be able to participate in on campus workouts with coaches. With the exception of first-year students for which home is not a place in which they can successfully complete their academic experience, first-year students will not be able to participate during the spring semester
- Will winter season athletes be able to return to campus prior to the start of the spring semester?
Winter season athletes will return to campus at the same time as all other students, which is scheduled for February 6, 2021.
- Will Bowdoin teams compete during the spring semester?
We do not know if our fall, winter or spring teams will compete during the spring semester. We hope to have a better sense of our plans as the NCAA and the State of Maine release additional safety guideline updates for athletic activities in the weeks ahead. The extent of our athletic offering will also be determined by our access to athletic facilities on campus, as some facilities may be used to support the academic experience on campus. We hope to have an additional update by early December, if not before.
- Will there be NESCAC conference scheduling and championships for winter and spring sports?
The NESCAC continues to review plans for the winter and spring sports seasons and will release additional information when a determination regarding conference scheduling and championships has been determined. When fall season conference schedules and championships were cancelled, institutions were permitted to play both conference and non-conference opponents at their own discretion.
