Boston’s Callahan Tunnel shut down by wedged backhoe - Boston Herald

The Callahan Tunnel in Boston is completely closed after someone tried to drive a too-big piece of construction equipment through it, state police say.

State police on Thursday morning said there was an “over-height trailered backhoe” that’s “wedged” in the tunnel, which runs from downtown into East Boston. The staties removed the backhoe shortly after 11 a.m. , but the tunnel remained closed.

The backhoe sprung a hydraulic leak, causing the troopers to complete shut down the tunnel.

The six-decade-old Callahan — officially the Lieutenant William F. Callahan Jr. Tunnel — is the newer of the battery of tunnels running between downtown and East Boston. The Callahan heads out from downtown, carrying many toward the airport, and the parallel Sumner, which is 30 years older, takes traffic the other way.

It’s fairly frequent for overly confident truckers to start their rigs down one or the other, only to a little ways in.
