Two main routes of travel between Ashland and Medford were shut down due to a wildfire burning nearby Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Interstate 5 was shut down in both directions near Ashland after a wildfire broke out near the freeway Tuesday afternoon and southbound Highway 99 was shuttered at milepost 17, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Around 11:30 a.m., Ashland officials reported a grass fire near Almeda Drive in Quiet Village with crews responding to the blaze. The freeway was closed between exits 14 and 24, authorities said.

“Those in the area west of Michelle Avenue and lower Cambridge Street should evacuate,” city officials said in a statement. “Others should avoid the area until it is deemed safe to return or travel.”

The fire was one of many burning across the state as high temperatures and strong winds buffeted the region.

It was unclear when the interstate would reopen to traffic. The Oregon Department of Transportation asked the drivers of vehicles left on the freeway to contact the agency’s dispatch at 541-858-3103 to provide contact information so that the vehicles can be moved when the freeway reopens. Vehicles left without contact information could be towed, officials said.
