BRIDGEPORT — There will be three traps maintained in the city to deter mosquito activity, city officials said Wednesday along with information about its yearly “Fight to Bite!” initiative.

Each year, the city promotes the seasonal health campaign to provide resources to residents related to preventive measures and risk factors linked to mosquito- and tick-borne illnesses.

On Tuesday, the state confirmed West Nile virus was detected in 28 mosquito pools in Bridgeport, Darien, Greenwich, Guilford, Newington, Norwalk and Stamford.

“While there have been no confirmed cases,” of West Nile Virus in Bridgeport, “this is the perfect time to remind residents about steps they can take to minimize risks that are associated with mosquito breeding,” Bridgeport Health Director Lisa Morrissey said in a statement released Wednesday.

The West Nile virus is one of several mosquito-borne illnesses that the state tests for during the summer.

State officials announced earlier this week that the first Eastern Equine Encephalitis-positive mosquitoes of the season had been detected in Connecticut. The mosquitoes came from a pool in Stonington and tested positive for EEE on Aug. 5, officials said.

There were four human cases of EEE in Connecticut last year, with three fatalities in the southeastern part of the state.

Tall grass and still water are among the habitats that can attract mosquitoes, while lemon grass, citronella and marigold plants can repel them.

Residents should avoid being outside during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. If outside for long periods of time, the city urges residents to wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeve shirt to protect open skin from mosquito bites.

During this year’s “Fight the Bite!” campaign, the city plans to distribute informational door hangers and all-natural insect repellent wipes throughout city neighborhoods.

The city will also have three mosquito traps maintained by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station to deter mosquito activity.
