In brief: East Bay parks closed due to extreme fire activity - East Bay Times

EAST BAY

Due to the extreme fire activity in the region, all parks in the East Bay Regional Park District as of Aug. 19 were closed until further notice, except paved regional trails and some shoreline parks.

The park district has experienced an unprecedented number of wildfires, including Round Valley Regional Preserve, Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, Del Valle Regional Park, Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve, Ohlone Wilderness Regional Preserve, Mission Peak Regional Preserve and Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park.

Extreme heat, poor air quality and extreme fire dangers were expected to continue throughout the coming days, adding to park safety concerns. While some parks are remaining open, the district is advising against using regional parks at this time due to poor air quality. For a current list of the district’s open parks, visit ebparks.org.

Rotary Club donates $1K for computers in school district

In its continuing commitment to local schools, the Clayton Valley-Concord Sunrise Rotary Club has donated $1,000 to the Walnut Creek group Yours Humanly to help provide Chromebook computers to students in need in the Mount Diablo Unified School District. Yours Humanly provides access to quality education and equitable resources to underprivileged children around the world, lifting them out of poverty and other challenging situations.

“Your donation will fund Chromebooks for students at Bel Air Elementary, which will enable them to participate in distance learning,” said Sunny Singh, founder and CEO of Yours Humanly. Clayton Valley-Concord Sunrise Rotary, chartered in 1987, funds educational programs such as this locally and abroad.

Church offers emergency food supply four times a year

All students, veterans and residents of Contra Costa County are welcome to receive a three-day emergency supply of food four times a year from the Hillcrest Congregational Church. The church’s food room is open from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All that is needed is an identification card. Church officials do ask only for your name to ensure their rule of four times a year is followed. This information is confidential. All clients and family members older than 2 who come to the Hillcrest Congregational Church Campus must wear a mask. Follow the signs for entering and exiting the food room. The church campus is at 404 Gregory Lane in Pleasant Hill, and the office phone number is 925-689-8260.

ORINDA

Gym offering free, outdoor workouts for community

Keep it moving while gyms are still closed! Anytime Fitness Orinda is offering free, socially distanced outdoor workouts every Sunday to the entire community. Membership is not required to participate, and all fitness levels are welcome. All workouts will be led by one of their Certified Personal Trainers and will start at 9 a.m. in front of the gym at 2 Orinda Theatre Square, #148. Workouts will be without physical contact and limited to 10 attendees to limit the spread of germs. Those interested can sign up online at bit.ly/AForindaoutdoorworkouts.
