MADISON – The Big Ten Conference has decided to attempt to move the league's 2020 football season to the second semester.
Multiple sources told the Journal Sentinel that an announcement is expected early this week.
According to multiple reports, Big Ten presidents and chancellors were scheduled to meet Sunday to discuss the league's plans for shutting down fall sports because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Wisconsin is scheduled to hold its first practice of preseason camp on Monday.
Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren is believed to be a proponent of moving the 2020 football season to the spring semester.
However, league officials would have to overcome myriad obstacles to hold even a modified season in the spring. Those include issues with inclement weather and whether players would opt out of the season in order to prepare for the 2021 NFL draft, which is scheduled to be held April 29 through May 1.
If the Big Ten announces Monday it is shutting down fall sports, the move would come just five days after the league unveiled a revamped 10-game football schedule, along with detailed protocols for COVID-19 testing.
That quick turnaround surely would force Warren to explain what changed since the schedule was released.
The Mid-American Conference on Saturday became the first FBS conference to announce it was moving football and other fall sports to the spring.
Several Big Ten schools opened preseason football camp last week but on Saturday the league announced players would be prohibited from wearing any protective gear other than a helmet. That move was made to prevent full-contact work in camp.
Six of the Big Ten’s 14 football teams were forced to shut down summer workouts because of positive tests.
Late Sunday, players representing the Power 5 conferences staged a campaign on Twitter in an attempt to convince school presidents and chancellors and league commissioners to find a way to stage football in 2020.
Among the players pushing for a fall season were Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.
They asked to establish universal and mandated health and safety procedures and protocols for COVID-19 in all NCAA leagues.
They want players to have the opportunity to opt out of the season if they choose and to guarantee that players who do choose to sit out maintain their eligibility.
Finally, they asked for the eventual creation of a college football players association.
