Update at 1 a.m. Monday: A New York alert system, NY-Alert, which notifies subscribers of significant highway closures and other emergencies, reported Route 8 at School Street was closed “due to a fatal crash.” However, members of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office declined to confirm whether anyone died, and said information will be released later Monday.

Madison County 911 dispatchers said they do not know if anyone died in the crash, although they say it was a “serious” crash. The sheriff’s office spent more than five hours at the scene investigating, 911 dispatchers said.

Update at 12:35 a.m. Monday: Madison County 911 dispatchers say police reopened Route 8 within the last hour.

Leonardsville, N.Y. — At least one person has died after a tractor-trailer and another vehicle crashed Sunday evening in Madison County, according to NY-Alert.

All lanes of Route 8 at School Street in Leonardsville remained closed at 10 p.m., about four hours after the crash, Madison County 911 dispatchers said.

Someone called 911 at 6:10 p.m. to say an 18-wheeler and another vehicle had collided on Route 8 in Leonardsville, a hamlet of Brookfield, dispatchers said.

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the crash, but three ambulances and a Mercy Flight helicopter were called to the scene, according to 911.

Leonardsville, Brookfield and Bridgewater firefighters; West Winfield, Edwards and Bridgewater ambulances; the Mercy Flight helicopter; and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Shortly after the crash Sunday, NY-Alert — an alert system that notifies subscribers of critical, emergency-related information — stated it was a fatal crash.

No other information was immediately available.
