'We shut down Mayfair': Protesters march throughout mall before making way to police department - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Mayfair mall shut down Wednesday afternoon as more than 50 protesters marched throughout the mall.

It's the latest demonstration in the City of Wauwatosa following the February shooting death of a teenager by a police officer.

Alvin Cole, 17, of Milwaukee was fatally shot by a police officer in the parking lot of The Cheesecake Factory, which is on the same property as the mall. Police were initially called to the scene following an altercation inside the mall.

Police say Cole fired first with a stolen gun. Cole's family disputes the teenager fired a gun. The case remains under investigation by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.

Protesters marched throughout the mall, chanting and holding signs, while some business owners looked through their windows. Some shoppers, who were unaware of the protest, walked around the mall during the protest.

"We came here, we had every store shut their doors, we shut down Mayfair mall, and we're going to head to the Wauwatosa Police Department," said Henry Lee, an organizer of the protest.

Lee said the protest was a "stand in solidarity" because of Cole's death.

Protesters marched inside the mall for an hour, and then made their way outside, where they chanted "Black Lives Matter" near the mall's entrance.

They then made their way to the Wauwatosa Police Department, some in cars, and some on foot.

Many stores inside the mall remained closed after protesters left around 5 p.m., while others opened their doors back up.

Frank Sensabaugh, also known as Frank Nitty, joined the protesters when they exited the mall.

"We gotta get justice and we got to stick together and the community has to get justice no matter what," he said.

Lee said they are calling for the removal of Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber, and police officer Joseph Mensah, who shot Cole and two others while in the line of duty in the last five years.

Several protests in and around Wauwatosa in recent weeks have honed in on that topic, as attorneys for the families of Cole and Jay Anderson Jr. continue to push for the removal of Mensah. Anderson was fatally shot by Mensah in 2016. That killing was deemed self-justified defense.
