MORRISTOWN — Town officials shut down a Morristown bar over the weekend after a photo posted on social media showed guests breaking social distancing guidelines and state orders.
At around 9 p.m. on Friday, Tashmoo Bar and Restaurant, which was operating in the parking lot behind the Woman’s Club of Morristown, was shut down for violating Gov. Phil Murphy's executive order on outdoor dining. In the same week restaurants and bars reopened for business, town officials revoked the bar's outdoor dining license on Friday.
"Many of our established restaurants and retailers have worked hard to pivot their business model to comply with the State regulations and ensure the health of their patrons," read a town statement issued over the weekend. "Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to the contrary, not all businesses followed the guidelines and we had to shut them down."
According to Jillian Barrick, the town's business administrator, Tashmoo Bar and Restaurant does not face any other penalties. Bar owner Billy Walsh was unavailable for comment on Monday morning.
Prior to Tashmoo's opening, town officials reviewed the bar's outdoor dining plan, which adhered to state guidelines, according to Barrick. Tashmoo was set to open weekly from Thursday to Sunday with live music on Saturday and Sunday. Reservations were not required.
On Saturday, Morristown reissued outdoor dining guidelines and urged businesses to follow all orders set by the state. Moving forward, town officials issued four new directives to regulate outdoor dining.
Dining: Indoor dining in NJ can return on July 2 at a reduced capacity, Murphy says
Malls: Murphy says NJ malls can reopen with new guidelines
Opinion: New Jersey's restaurants must — and shall — return from the pandemic
The town-issued guidelines include:
- Capacity of an expansion area will be limited to the number of seats approved as part of a socially distanced layout
- No standing patrons will be permitted; everyone must be seated to be served
- No patrons are permitted self-service of alcohol unless served to go in compliance with the State’s guidelines; all on-premise alcohol service must be done by wait staff to seated patrons
- Capacity for any outside dining area or expansion will be limited to no more than the indoor capacity of the associated business
In the photo posted by Morristown.Nj on Instagram, hundreds of guests were seen gathering in small groups at Tashmoo's outdoor beer garden. In the photo, patrons were not wearing face masks. According to state-issued guidelines on outdoor dining, businesses must ensure that tables and individual groups are at least six feet apart. In addition to social distancing rules, businesses must limit tables to eight customers and prohibit smoking in any outdoor area designated for food and beverage only.
The Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control issued a special ruling to allow liquor license holders to apply for a one-time permit to expand their premises for services.
