Aug 9 (Reuters) - Marathon Petroleum Corp (MPC.N) was inspecting the shut gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracker (FCC) at its 593,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, Texas, for damage on Tuesday following an unplanned shutdown on Sunday, said sources familiar with plant operations.

Marathon spokesperson Jamal Kheiry declined to comment on the refinery's operations.

The shutdown of the 140,000-bpd FCC-3 was due to an equipment malfunction, the company said in a notice filed with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

To complete an initial restart of the FCC takes at least two days and returning to full production can take up to a week, the sources said. Marathon must first determine if there is any damage before the restart can begin.

During the Sunday malfunction, feedstock stopped flowing into the risers, which are the entrance to the reactor where fine powder catalyst mixes with fuel oil vapor and steam to begin the conversion to unfinished gasoline and other products, according to the sources.
