Home Active Wildland Fire Rainfall overnight reduces fire activity on Little Chena River Fire

Fire behavior on the Little Chena River Fire (#499) was moderate yesterday. Rainfall last night and this morning has lowered fire activity even more today. A dense smoke layer yesterday throughout Fairbanks and surrounding areas limited the use of helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. That same smoke layer shaded the fire helping to reduce activity.

The northern flank continues to hold steady after being coated with retardant Friday evening. The southern flank of the fire has some creeping activity with limited flame lengths. Fairbanks Area Forestry Incident Commander Ernest Prax indicated crews and equipment will continue to work on the southern flank today to minimize perimeter expansion.

Fire acreage is approximately 33 acres, which is lower than the previous estimate as crews were able to get around the perimeter for more accurate mapping. Any clearing of smoke today is a double-edged sword as aerial resources can assist with suppression efforts, but more heat from the sun would be able to reach the fire which could produce a higher level of fire activity.

Two hotshot crews are being moved from the Minto Lakes Fire today to bolster the forces already assigned.  The lightning caused fire is approximately 11 miles northeast of the Fort Knox mine.
