CLEVELAND, Ohio — Guardians hitters gave Aaron Civale the slimmest of margins with which to work early Saturday, which is a very difficult way to defeat New York’s unrelenting offense.
The Yankees put the game away with a four-run seventh inning, holding Cleveland scoreless over the final eight frames to hand the Guardians a 6-1 loss and sweep a split doubleheader at Progressive Field.
Cleveland has dropped 11 of its last 15 regular season meetings with the Yankees and is 6-6 in six doubleheaders this season. It’s the first time the Guardians have been swept in a twin bill since Sept. 20, 2021 at home against Kansas City.
The Guardians jumped in front on Amed Rosario’s solo home run off Yankees starter Nestor Cortes in the first inning. It was Rosario’s second home run in his last 15 games and first long ball at home since Sept. 27. Cleveland’s shortstop is batting .351 since May30. His 46 hits lead the majors in that stretch.
“He’s been unbelievably consistent in the field and at the plate,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said of Rosario. “His motor doesn’t seem to stop, which is really helpful in a lot of areas.”
The early lead energized the Guardians, but did not provide much room for error according to Civale.
“It’s more just energy than breathing room,” Civale said. “It’s a long game. Nine innings is plenty of time to do anything, as we’ve proven many times. It’s more energy than anything.”
Civale appeared to be in command with two outs in the fourth inning after he got Yankees slugger Aaron Judge to ground into a double play, but back-to-back solo home runs by Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton followed, turning Cleveland’s lead into a one-run Yankees advantage.
It was the second time in as many games that New York hit back-to-back homers Saturday, and the 10th time this season.
Francona said Civale’s final line might look skewed because of a few late runs, but he pitched well against a good offensive club.
“There’s been various things that have kinda disrupted his progression, but if he can continue to stay healthy, he can pitch,” Francona said. “We’ve seen it and he’s getting closer and closer and closer. I thought his breaking ball was outstanding tonight.”
Cortes, meanwhile, settled in and retired 14 out of the next 15 batters he faced after Rosario’s home run, allowing just a single to Gabriel Arias in the fifth and a base hit to Rosario in the sixth. He finished the sixth by striking out José Ramírez for the third time, marking Ramírez’s first three-strikeout game since July 18 last year.
Cortes (7-3, 2.44) moved to 2-0 against Cleveland this season after striking out six and not allowing a walk in six innings.
New York scored four times in the seventh to put the game out of reach after Civale opened the frame by allowing back-to-back singles by Rizzo and Stanton.
Josh Donaldson delivered an RBI double off reliever Enyel De Los Santos, and an errant pickoff throw from De Los Santos later allowed Donaldson to score. After a walk to Joey Gallo, Isiah Kiner-Falefa singled just under Owen Miller’s glove to drive in Miguel Andujar, and Kyle Higashioka plated Gallo with a sacrifice fly to left.
Civale (2-5, 7.04) tossed six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks. It was his longest outing since May 20 against Detroit, a start that ended when he injured his left glute and subsequently spent a month on the injured list. Civale acknowledged that having his start moved back by Friday’s rainout presented a challenge, but his teammate, Shabe Bieber, has dealt with the same issue multiple times already this season.
“It’s nothing new, it’s just something you’ve got to repeat what you did the day before,” Civale said. “It’s part of the game. You just rely on past experiences.”
The Guardians loaded the bases in the seventh against Yankees righty Michael King, but King struck out Brooklyn native Richie Palacios on a 3-2 changeup to escape trouble. Cleveland would load the bases again in the ninth against Wandy Peralta, but closer Clay Holmes entered with two outs and got pinch-hitter Steven Kwan to ground out for his 15th save in 16 chances.
New York moved to 5-0 against Cleveland and has outscored the Guardians 38-12. The Yankees have a chance Sunday to sweep the season series for the first time since 2007.
Next: The series concludes Sunday when right-hander Triston McKenzie (4-6, 4.03) takes the mound for the Guardians and lefty Jordan Montgomery (3-1, 3.27) goes for the Yankees. First pitch is set for 1:40 p.m. The game will air on Bally Sports Great Lakes, WTAM 1100 AM, WMMS 100.7 FM and the Guardians Radio Network.
