WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — A barricade situation completely shut down I-40 in West Memphis Wednesday night, according to the West Memphis Police Department.

Arkansas State Police pulled a man over near the 7th Street exit in West Memphis around 7:45 p.m. but the person refused to get out of the car, leading to the barricade situation that closed down the major interstate, according to WMPD.

Less than an hour later, by 8:40 p.m., that man was in police custody in connection with the incident and traffic resumed.

But, the barricade situation left cars and trucks piled up along I-40 for miles in both directions as authorities closed both sides of the interstate.

FOX13 witnessed an armored vehicle turn onto the interstate and drive towards the scene.

West Memphis Police said they sent that armored truck to the barricade and are also helped with drone surveillance.

It’s still unclear why Arkansas State Police pulled the man over in the first place.

FOX13 will update this story as more information becomes available.
