SYRACUSE — The Cortland/Homer hockey team could not find the net and allowed Skaneateles to pull away as the Golden Eagles fell to the Lakers 4-0 in the Section III Division II final Monday night at the Upstate Medical Arena at The Oncenter War Memorial.

“Skaneateles is an excellent program top to bottom,” Cortland/Homer head coach Matt Caron said. “The kids work hard, so you know you’re going to get a good effort every time.”

After a penalty was called on Cortland/Homer’s Tucker Gabriel, Skaneateles got on the board with a power-play goal from Jack Torrey with 5:45 remaining in the first period.

In the second period, Gabriel was sent to the penalty box again, this time for a scuffle that took place in front of the Cortland/Homer goal resulting in a hooking call. Skaneateles took advantage again, this time getting a goal from Garrett Krieger, who beat Golden Eagles goalie Riley Delage to make it 2-0. Both penalties proved to be costly, as the Lakers capitalized on both to increase their lead.

“Their power play tonight got us, we were kind of holding our own up until then,” Caron said.

Early in the third period, Henry Major made it 3-0 for Skaneateles. The clock was the enemy now for Cortland/Homer, which had some decent looks throughout the game and in the final period, but the Lakers’ defense and goalie Chad Lowe did not allow anything to slip past them. Lowe finished with 27 saves on the night. Caron spoke highly of the play of the Lakers’ goaltender.

“We had our chances down low and just couldn’t bury it, their goaltender (Lowe) was on tonight and the shutout proves the point,” Caron said.

With the loss, Cortland/Homer also loses seniors Tanner Douglass, Logan Swartz, Braden Marsh, Jacob Couture, Riley Delage and Reagan Hillman.

“We thanked our seniors for their leadership on and off the ice,” Caron said. “They really set the tone for the program. They live and die hockey and that’s a great thing to have. This is a tough loss, we came up a little short tonight, but they are a great group of kids.”

Cortland/Homer finished with a record of 16-4 in Caron’s debut season as head coach. The Golden Eagles lose a solid group of seniors due to graduation, but will be bringing back a lot of key pieces and, though next season is far away, the expectations will be high.

“I think we are returning 14 players and that’s great, so we are not going to have to fill too many holes,” Caron said. “Those are guys that have been with us not just this year but year’s past. They are going to know the routine and what is expected. We are very excited.”
