The Athletics will be without one of their young pitchers to begin the 2022 MLB season.
Right-handed pitching prospect Brent Honeywell Jr., who Oakland acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a November trade, will be shut down indefinitely after having a stress reaction in the olecranon bone in his elbow, the San Francisco Chronicle's Matt Kawahara reported Monday morning after speaking to A's trainer Nick Paparesta.
Honeywell Jr., a 26-year-old prospect drafted in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, has sustained numerous arm injuries throughout his career, preventing him from establishing himself at the major league level.
Before making his major league debut in 2021 with the Rays, Honeywell had missed the previous three seasons (2018-2020), after undergoing four different surgeries, including Tommy John in 2018.
Throughout his minor league career, Honeywell posted a record of 36-23 with a 3.06 ERA in 497 2/3 innings pitched.
In the majors, Honeywell made three appearances last season, starting two games, and pitching just 4 1/3 innings.

“I think we’re just doing our due diligence and making sure that everyone that needs a look at it looks at it and we make the right determination for him for the long term of his career," Paparesta told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Honeywell was a candidate for the A's starting rotation before being shut down. Depending on how long he is sidelined, Oakland figures to roll out a rotation consisting of Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, Cole Irvin and Daulton Jefferies this season.
