St. Paul’s got two touchdowns apiece from Christopher Bracy and Trey Flowers as it routed Selma 36-0 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs at E.E. Delaney Stadium on Friday night.
Bracy blocked a punt and fell on it in the end zone for a touchdown, and had a 1-yard touchdown run, while Flowers had a 61-yard touchdown run and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Despite the lopsided score, St. Paul’s (8-3) had a hard time finding its groove until late in the game.
“We could never get into a rhythm on offense,” head coach Steve Mask said. “The way they (Selma) possessed the ball, we couldn’t into a lot of rhythm, and then in the fourth quarter, we got going a little bit.”
St. Paul’s took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Bracy blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Grayson Myles’s PAT put St. Paul’s up 7-0.
After Selma (5-6) turned the ball over on downs after a long drive, St. Paul’s offense finally took the field with 3:27 to go in the quarter and wasted no time getting on the board again when Jaylen Sulton’s 11-yard run set up a 49-yard touchdown pass from John Wallace Holladay to Walter Jackson. Holladay was successful on the 2-point conversion run.
Flowers’ 61-yard touchdown run with 7:49 to go in the second quarter extended the lead to 22-0.
St. Paul’s added two more scores in the fourth quarter when Bracy got his second touchdown on a 1-yard run with 8:20 remaining, and Flowers caught the 19-yard touchdown pass with 5:55 to go.
“I never thought we were in control of the game,” Mask said. “I think Selma is much improved from when we played them last year. You know how a car misses a little bit? We just have to fine tune it a little bit. The game wasn’t pretty, but I sure liked the outcome.”
Play of the game: Flowers’ 61-yard touchdown run had to be the highlight of the game. He got past several tacklers and even got great downfield blocking from Holladay before diving for the pylon.
Key sequence: Flowers’ touchdown run was set up by a great defensive play. On third-and-1, Selma quarterback Roderick Ward had a first down, but in an effort to get additional yardage, was stripped of the ball and Sulton recovered for St. Paul’s. Flowers scored five plays later.
Key stats: For St. Paul’s, Flowers had three carries for 76 yards, Sulton eight carries for 62 yards, and Holladay was 7-of-14 passing for 100 yards and two touchdowns. For Selma, Dylan Walker had 10 carries for 71 yards and Jason Rogers added 12 carries for 54 yards. Ward was 7-of-21 passing for 48 yards and an interception.
By the numbers: 4, tailbacks used by St. Paul’s. … 10, first-half penalties for Selma. … 14, penalties for Selma. ... 23, first-half passing attempts for both teams; 7:13, Length of time for Selma’s second drive.
Coachspeak: “We forced three turnovers and we should have had some more. Selma had some pretty big guys and they caused us some problems. But what I liked about our guys was that when we had to stop them, we stopped them.” – Mask
They said it …: “I have nothing but the utmost respect for those guys. They came in with a well-executed game plan, and they executed all night.” – Selma head coach Willie Gandy
“We’ve worked on it (blocking punts) in practice a lot, and I was able to get through there and block it. We had a good game plan going in, and we really focused on the small things and executed well.” -- Bracy
What’s next? St. Paul’s travels to face No. 1 Pike Road next week.
