Elected officials in NYC are calling for the city to be declared an orange zone
Following the rise in COVID-19 cases citywide — the positivity rate now stands at five percent on a seven-day rolling average — a group of elected officials have renewed calls to designate all of New York City an orange zone, AM New York reports. If the city enacts the classification, restaurants would have to shut down indoor dining, and would be limited to outdoor seating, takeout, and delivery.
On Sunday, City Council member Mark Levine, along with his council colleague Carlina Rivera, State Senator Gustavo Rivera, and State Assembly member Richard Gottfried, issued a joint statement calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to issue the new restrictions. “Targeted neighborhood measures are not sufficient at this point because community spread is now city-wide, and because New Yorkers are highly mobile, moving frequently between neighborhoods,” part of the letter reads. Levine and several other local elected officials have been calling for such limits for nearly a month now, arguing that the federal government should agree on a new stimulus bill that will allow restaurants to remain closed without having to worry about making money.
So far, Cuomo has resisted calls for citywide designations and instead, he’s been in favor of a micro-cluster approach, arguing that this method is the most effective in combating the spread and ensuring minimal business disruption.
