Newark police busted an illegal bar being run in a warehouse early Sunday morning, making it the second speakeasy broken up by cops in the state this month.
Newark Police Vice Crimes Task Force detectives investigated reports of a large party at 12 a.m., Sunday at a warehouse located at on Libella Court.
Inside, they found 200 people eating, drinking alcohol and participating in illegal gambling, in violation of current coronavirus regulations against large indoor gatherings, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement.
On Dec. 7, Gov. Phil Murphy lowered the limit of indoor gathering to 25 people, down from 150 people in response to the spiking number of COVID-19 cases in the state.
Detectives also saw two woman selling alcoholic beverages from behind a makeshift bar in the warehouse. Neither of the women were able to produce the appropriate paperwork proving they held a license to sell alcohol, Ambrose said in a statement.
Police arrested Denisse Tinizaray, 26, and Katherine Tinizaray, 28, both of Newark, for maintaining an illegal liquor establishment, illegal possession of alcohol and illegal sale of alcohol.
This is the second illegal bar broken up in the state this month. Trenton police arrested a Chambersburg rowhouse resident on Dec. 14 after responding to neighbors complaints and found 45 people inside the home.
At the illegal bar in Trenton, police say the resident was charging $5 a beer and confiscated $942 in cash and 82 small bags of cocaine.
