BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — There have been close to 1400 new cases of COVID-19 over the last week in Western New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce a plan to combat the uptick in cases Monday.
“This is the highest infection rate in the state. The rest of the state has gotten it under control. Western New Yorkers, step up and do your part,” Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said.
I will be joining @LtGovHochulNY this morning at the dedication of the new downtown Train Station. We will also be discussing the big increase in Covid-19 cases with staff of @NYGovCuomo as well. Sunday, Lieutenant Governor Hochul and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz both warned Western New Yorkers about the increasing spread of COVID-19.
“The biggest problem that we are hearing is private parties that people are having in which they’re bringing together people who have not been together,” Poloncarz said.
“A lot of house parties going on. They’re not necessarily visible but there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence,” Hochul said.
Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce a new plan to combat the uptick in cases in Western New York Monday. Lieutenant Governor Hochul said it won’t involve a shut down for now.
“The widespread rapid testing. We didn’t have that early on. We didn’t have contact tracers. We didn’t have adequate supplies of PPE, ventilators, medical knowledge about how to treat people so more lives can be saved. The different dynamic in terms of our knowledge base and how we can handle it. So it will be a different response,” Hochul said.
But County Executive Poloncarz said if Western New York continues on this path, more restrictions may be necessary.
“They’re putting us in a situation where if these numbers continue to rise, we’re going to be left with no choice but to shut things down again. We don’t want to do that,” Poloncarz said, “If this continues, we’re going to have to say no Thanksgiving except for your immediate family.”
