Police dispersed a protest outside the home of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Caesarea on Saturday and handed out fines to the participants for violating the coronavirus lockdown.
About 130 people participated in the demonstration, to which they arrived on bicycles, and police handed out fines for disturbing the peace and violating the coronavirus lockdown.
According to a police statement, officers arrived at the scene after someone reported the protest, and that they carried out "enforcement of the emergency measures against bicycle riders in Caesarea who violated the lockdown rules."
A large anti-Netanyahu protest is planned for Saturday night at Tel Aviv's Habima Square. The Crime Minister protest group released a statement saying "We will no longer cooperate with the dictatorial laws and limitations on the right to protest while Bibi and his ministers deride the rules," a reference to the string of government figures who have admitted to violating the lockdown.
The group said that the protest is a "warm-up" for a demonstration outside the prime minister's official residence on Jerusalem's Balfour Street later Saturday night. "We will wear masks, we will keep our distance and we will shout with our heads held high for the corrupt ones to leave," they said.
On Thursday, thousands of protesters throughout the country called on Netanyahu to step down due to his indictments in three criminal cases. A day earlier, the government had approved a one-week extension on the emergency regulations which allow the government to limit demonstrations to no more than 1000 meters from a participant's home.
Since the legislation curbing protests went into effect, demonstrators have regularly gathered within their one kilometer, in accordance with the coronavirus lockdown. Demonstrations have continued even despite reports of police violence directed at protesters and arrests.
