Golf courses will be closed under Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions that come into effect at midnight and after initially planning to remain open, Tennis Ireland have now instructed all member clubs to "suspend all activities" with immediate effect.

Last night Tennis Ireland released a statement saying it interpreted the government guidelines to mean that outdoor courts should remain open for the purposes of exercise and youth training.

However, after communication with Sport Ireland this morning, they have instructed all clubs to close immediately.

"Tennis Ireland understands the difficulties and disappointment that this instruction will pose for players, coaches, club volunteers and staff but the challenge caused by Covid-19 impacts across all sectors of society and sport and we need a nationwide effort to fight it.," they told members.

"Tennis Ireland will, as it always has done, work closely with Government and Sport Ireland to reopen our sport as soon as possible, even on a restricted basis, in as safe a manner as possible."

In May, golf courses and tennis courts were among the first sporting facilities to reopen after the first lockdown but, after dialogue with Sport Ireland, the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU) have confirmed that their clubs will be forced to close for six weeks.

In a joint statement, the governing bodies said they are still seeking an exemption on ranges and practice facilities.
