Here’s what’s closing in the Bay Area due to likely power shut-offs and fire danger - San Francisco Chronicle

Businesses and parks across the Bay Area are planning closures ahead of expected strong winds and extremely low humidity weather conditions starting Sunday, which have prompted potentially widespread safety power shut-offs.

These dry conditions are expected to create extreme fire danger for the region, National Weather Service officials said.

Here is a look at what is closing or making preparations to withstand the looming dry, windy conditions and potential shut-offs expected on Sunday:

• Parks

The East Bay Regional Park District said the following parks and recreation areas in their coverage area will be closed: Anthony Chabot, Claremont Canyon, Huckleberry, Lake Chabot, Leona Canyon, Redwood, Roberts, Sibley, Tilden, Wildcat Canyon and Kennedy Grove; Lafayette and San Pablo Reservoir recreation areas, and all East Bay trails.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District also tweeted that its Lafayette and San Pablo Reservoir recreation areas and all East Bay trails on district land will be closed Sunday and Monday due to fire danger.

• Schools

Oakland Unified School District said eleven Oakland schools could be impacted by PG&E shut-offs, such as: Chabot Elementary, Community Day, Grass Valley Elementary, Hillcrest K-8, Joaquin Miller Elementary, Laurel Elementary, Montclair Elementary, Montera Middle School, Redwood Heights Elementary, Skyline High School and Thornhill Elementary. “If indeed the power is out and students are unable to attend their classes, they will be asked to do their school work asynchronously, and report in to their teacher the first chance they get, letting them know they were unable to get online,” the Oakland Unified School District said.

Castro Valley Unified School District said if power shut-offs impact homes of district families, students “are asked to do their asynchronous work while their power is out and report to their teacher at the first opportunity letting them know they were unable to get online.” District officials urged students to charge their computers, WiFi hotspots and cell phones ahead of the likely shut-offs. District officials said they “recognize that if the PSPS lasts three days, that would make charging anything problematic.”

• Medical clinics

East Bay Pediatrics said its Orinda location “may be affected” by a likely shut-off on Monday and “possibly a few days after that.” If a shut-off occurs, officials said the Orinda location will be closed to patient visits and flu clinics. “Our staff will notify you by phone as soon as possible about changes to your appointment,” East Bay Pediatrics said.
