Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said Thursday that fire-prevention power outages were possible on Sunday and Monday in northeastern California and parts of the Sierra foothills.

The utility said that the possibility of a public safety power shut-off was “elevated” for those regions, meaning that outages are not certain but the weather indicates that they may be necessary. The goal of the outages is to prevent power infrastructure damaged by winds from sparking wildfires.
None of the nine Bay Area counties are included. PG&E said the main areas of concern are “the eastern portion of Tehama county as well as Butte, Plumas, Yuba and Sierra counties.”
It’s a disappointment for Californians who have seen hopes for weekend rain fizzle as the wildfire season drags on.
“More fire weather concerns are already on the horizon,” tweeted UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain.
Still, PG&E said that current forecasts indicate that the weather will not be as dangerous as during some previous shut-offs, so the outages are expected to affect a relatively limited number of people.

Correction: An earlier version of this article said that PG&E had issued a “watch” for the shut-off risk. The correct status is that the risk of a shut-off is “elevated.”
