The Port of Vancouver’s Terminal 1 redevelopment site has come to life as crews have embarked on two projects that will mark the start of the former port terminal’s planned transformation into a business and community hub.
Construction of the AC Hotel by Marriott and a renovation of Vancouver Landing, the western half of the Terminal 1 pier, are both underway. The hotel project comes from Vancouver-based Vesta Hospitality, and the port is undertaking the pier restoration.
The plan for the four-block, 10-acre Terminal 1 area calls for the development of the hotel, three mixed-use buildings and a public market building on the eastern half of the pier, replacing the former Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay building.

The hotel site technically broke ground more than a year ago, but the first phase of the work focused entirely on stabilizing the underlying soil. The port led that phase of the work, which included extracting more than 700 century-old wooden pilings and installing modern replacements.
The groundwork wrapped up in March, but the hotel construction didn’t kick off until Oct. 1. Vesta Hospitality CEO Rick Takach said the six-month gap was primarily caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
