VAAC Darwin recorded a first eruption since August 2015 when the volcano's most significant eruption in at least 100 years was over.On 16 July at 13:53 local time Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin recorded an explosive eruption that generated minor ash plume to an altitude of 10,982 ft (3,347 m).

Activity has strongly decreased at the volcano. When we visited Raung during 14-15 August, we observed pulsating, often near-continous ash emissions that produced plumes of several hundred meters.
