Phillies cancel all activity after 2 staff members test positive for COVID-19 - NBC Sports Philadelphia

cicingwos.blogspot.com

Two members of the Phillies' staff have tested positive for COVID-19, the team said Thursday afternoon. One is a coach, the other is a member of the home clubhouse staff. It's a concerning development even as the Phillies have staggered workouts this week, and they took quick action by canceling all activity at Citizens Bank Park until further notice.

The results of Wednesday's tests again showed no positives for Phillies players.

At the moment, it's unclear if this will put the resumption of the Phillies' season Saturday in risk but it is possible given MLB's reaction to the Marlins outbreak. The Phils are off until then after hosting a Marlins team on opening weekend that had half its roster test positive for coronavirus. Out of an abundance of caution, MLB postponed the Phillies' four-game home-and-home series against the Yankees that would have been July 27-30. It appears that series will be replayed next week, but who knows at this point.

The Phillies are scheduled to face the Blue Jays in a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 3:07 p.m. But this news, or more positive cases that arise, could change that. The Phillies are taking daily tests.

"We assume we'll be taking them for a while," GM Matt Klentak said Wednesday.

More on the Phillies

It looks like another Phillies series has been postponed. They were scheduled to resume their season with three games against the Blue Jays this weekend — a doubleheader Saturday and an afternoon game Sunday — but it looks like that series will not occur.

"We're not going to Philadelphia. Those games have been postponed," Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo told Toronto reporters Thursday afternoon, shortly after a Phillies coach and home clubhouse attendant tested positive for COVID-19.

Nothing official has been announced yet.

The Phillies have been off all week. They had their four-game home-and-home series with the Yankees postponed. It was supposed to be this Monday through Thursday. Yesterday, their Friday game against the Blue Jays was moved back to become a doubleheader Saturday.

Amid the postponements, the Phillies had been having scattered workouts at Citizens Bank Park this week after hosting a Marlins team on opening weekend that experienced an outbreak of more than a dozen players.

The Phillies canceled all activity at Citizens Bank Park Thursday until further notice.

The missed games are mounting and there probably won't be enough time for a team in the Phillies' position to make all of them up in a season with only six off-days. They could end up playing a bunch of doubleheaders, or they could end up having their end-of-season record interpreted based on winning percentage.

All of that, though, is secondary right now to health and safety.

Some Phillies injury news ...

Relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez's long-awaited elbow surgery is scheduled for today. Things always could change in the COVID-19 world of 2020, but July 30 — today — is the scheduled date for the procedure.

Update: Dominguez underwent successful right elbow UCL reconstruction surgery, the Phillies announced at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Dominguez, 25, initially injured the ulna collateral ligament in his right elbow in June 2019. At first, Dominguez appeared headed for Tommy John surgery, but a second opinion led to a different course of treatment. Dominguez never made it back in 2019.

The Phillies hoped an offseason of rehabilitation would allow Dominguez to contribute in the bullpen this season, but the pitcher re-injured himself in March and could not immediately have surgery because of COVID-19 concerns. Barring a late development, he will finally have the procedure today. Orthopedist James Andrews is scheduled to perform the surgery.

Dominguez's injury will end up impacting three seasons as it will require at least a year of recovery.

Elsewhere, some have wondered why outfielder Mickey Moniak is not getting work with the Phillies' satellite squad in Lehigh Valley. He apparently has suffered an unspecified knee injury and is in Clearwater receiving treatment.

Moniak, 22, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft. He played last season at Double-A Reading.
