The San Diego-Coronado Bridge was shut down for about two hours Wednesday after a suicidal man walking on the bridge, carrying a rock and a face mask, refused to comply with officers’ commands and was shot with a beanbag round.
Officers closed traffic on the bridge in both directions shortly after receiving 911 calls from motorists who spotted the 27-year-old man on the bridge shortly before 11 a.m.
When officers got nearby, they saw he was carrying a large rock and a face mask in his hands.

Coronado police repeatedly called over a public address system, asking the man to stop and talk with them, but he continued walking over the bridge and jumped over the median from the westbound lanes to the eastbound side.
At one point, the man told officers that he wanted the police to shoot him.
“The man continued walking towards officers and was non-compliant,” the department said on Instagram. “In order to prevent him from hurting himself or others, an officer deployed a Taser, which was ineffective.”
The officer then shot the man with a less-lethal beanbag, which hit him in the leg. Officers took the man into custody and rendered first aid.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries and to receive mental-health services.

California Highway Patrol Officer Sal Castro said the bridge was reopened to traffic shortly before 1 p.m.
