The California Botanic Garden in Claremont is not able to open its Butterfly Pavilion this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
In place of an in-person visit to the Butterfly Pavilion, the garden offers activity kits to introduce children and their families to the world of native butterflies and the native plants they depend on for survival.
The contents of the activity box will help families create a butterfly garden that supports local species with nectar and host plants.
Each box will contain three native plant seedlings that attract butterflies and sustain caterpillars, a wildflower seed packet curated with butterfly-friendly species, plant labels to decorate and a box of crayons, according to a news release.
Also included in the box is a butterfly activity book including information on native butterflies and plants, coloring pages, a butterfly identification key and tips on how to care for a fledgling butterfly garden.
There is also a Mega Box available, which will include two extra native plant seedlings, a swallowtail butterfly finger puppet, a set of dress-up butterfly wings (antennae included) and a pollinator-themed jump rope.
The original box costs $55 and the Mega Box is $85.
The boxes will be available for pickup starting Wednesday, June 24.
